Points Calculator

Earlier this week we released the Intervention Unit Builder. With it, we bundled the beta version of the points calculator to enable players to balance their units and set up relatively fair battles.

Here are some tips on getting started....

Open up the calculator and save a copy as the name of your force, for example "5/8 - Mech Inf" or "Dave's Frontier Scout Company".

Now you can begin to customise your first unit. Areas in light green indicate areas to input stats, and its best to work from the top as some of your earlier decisions influence the availability of attributes later on.

The first thing to do is to name your first unit - this should be a unique name and can be simple, such as unit 1 or M113(1) or relatively elaborate "Sgt O'Brien's First Assault Troop - The Fighting First" for instance. Underneath you will want to state what type of unit it is and input its classification. In our example we are going to make a sniper unit and we call it Amber 2-6. Its a Frontier Scout Sniper Team and it's infantry so we fill in the relative details. Working across and down the page we input the movement (5 - they're frontier scouts so quite rapid) agility (5 - they're on foot) and size (1, its a small unit). Being infantry, the Amber 2-6 has no armour. We give them a proficiency of 2 and a resilience of 2 as well.

Attack

The team's attack is a sniper rifle which has an AP of 0. Firepower and resilience usually match but because we want this sniper team to be dangerous but relatively fragile we have given them 3 for firepower.

Skills

Amber 2-6 is relatively well trained compared to their comrades so we give them the elite attribute. Also, being snipers, it would be inappropriate for them not to have infiltrate. We also want them to perform a spotting function and give them Recon. Being frontier scouts we also give them enhanced mobility, (allowing them to reroll failed difficult terrain tests) and the terrain specialist ability. Obviously they also get sniper and observer.

The finished unit should look something like the example below...

Manual Adjustments

Creating units is part science and part art. From gaming experience playing intervention, at 48pts the above unit is probably slightly overpriced. This is because, being a sniper, it is unlikely to materially benefit very often from enhanced mobility, terrain specialist and elite. To address this we may need to make a manual correction to more accurately reflect the in-game value of the abilities. From experience, we'd suggest that a better points value for this unit might be around 40 to 43 points but if you don't feel confident making manual adjustments, leave the value as it stands.

Saving Your Unit

When you are content with the unit, click "Add Unit to Roster" at the right hand side and it will save the unit as a new worksheet.

You can now start a new unit.
